MID-EAST FOOTBALL League: 1948-Present                            Back to Area FB Leagues                         HOME

 Current update: November 18, 2015

This league first appeared in 1948 - but had two previous versions under different names. The JDS Football League (Jefferson-Douglas-Shawnee) was formed in 1941 with LECOMPTON, SILVER LAKE, MC LOUTH, WASHBURN RURAL, ROSSVILLE & OSKALOOSA. WW II disrupted this league with travel restrictions, gas rationing, etc and OSKALOOSA & MC LOUTH dropped out in 1942. In fact this league folded after 1942 - the remaining teams (LECOMPTON, SILVER LAKE, WASHBURN RURAL & ROSSVILLE) reverted back to the name EAST CENTRAL LEAGUE for just the 1943 season.  The ECL was a basketball league only in 1941 and 1942. Football would also continue in the ECL starting in 1947 with 6 Man and later 8 Man versions of the game.

ALTA VISTA and ESKRIDGE joined WASHBURN RURAL, ROSSVILLE and SILVER LAKE to form the S & W League (Shawnee-Wabaunsee) in 1944. WASHBURN RURAL left in 1947 to join the JAYHAWK League and ALMA joined as the replacement for the Jr. Blues. The following year was the official start of the MID-EAST League with the following members: ALMA, ALTA VISTA, ESKRIDGE, ROSSVILLE, ST. MARY'S and SILVER LAKE.  ST. GEORGE was added in 1963 and ONAGA joined in 1965.

In 1969 ESKRIDGE and ST. GEORGE dropped out to join the MID-CENTRAL League. ALTA VISTA was lost to consolidation with COUNCIL GROVE that same year. JACKSON HEIGHTS and OSAGE CITY were recruited as members in 1970. In 1972 MISSION VALLEY came on board as a member - this marked the return of Eskridge as they were now a part of this recently established consolidated high school. In 1973 JACKSON HEIGHTS left for the K-36 League. Membership stayed the same until 1979 when BURLINGAME became part of the group. ALMA did consolidate with PAXICO & MAPLE HILL in 1978 - the new school stayed in the MID-EAST under the name WABAUNSEE.

ONAGA left the group in 1980 for the NEMAHA VALLEY League. BURLINGAME was replaced by SANTA FE TRAIL in 1981. That school consolidated SCRANTON, OVERBROOK and CARBONDALE a few years earlier. SANTA FE TRAIL was the largest school in the league and finally dropped out in 1990. The Chargers eventually joined the KAW VALLEY LEAGUE.  NORTHERN HEIGHTS was admitted for league play in 1991. ROCK CREEK entered the league in 1992 - this marked the return of ST. GEORGE that was consolidated with WESTMORELAND and ROCK CREEK in this new high school. RILEY COUNTY became the last new entry into the league in 1996.

In 2004 three schools, OSAGE CITY, MISSION VALLEY & NORTHERN HEIGHTS, dropped out to join the FLINT HILLS league. Kaw Valley USD 321 decided to merge ST. MARY'S and ROSSVILLE high schools in 2002. Voters fought this decision and a new school board voted to keep the schools separate. Current members of this league are RILEY COUNTY, ROCK CREEK, ROSSVILLE, ST. MARY'S, SILVER LAKE and WABAUNSEE.
